Spot the Difference

I take pictures of myself on my Toshiba Satellite integrated camera. Here are my pictures from June 22-25, 2009.

And here are my pictures from July 22-29, 2009..

Can you notice the difference I saw on those pictures?

I think I'm losing weight. Hehe. It's my 7th week of Running. Did it show on the pictures? I think so. Hehe. Sana. Mag-oo ka na.. Nu? Nde? Please nod.. Hehehe.

Run for Pandesal

This is one happy run. One I am so excited about.

--

I've always wanted to run the Silang-Tagaytay Aguinado Hi-way route (see map here). On planning for my Sunday long runs, I said why not run it? I am in top condition now (not necessarily in top shape, hehe, not yet).

I can do that, wake up 430am, carry a backpack with a bottle of water, a replacement T-shirt and a hundred pesos. Travel from my house to Silang proper and then run the Silang-Tagaytay Aguinado Hi-way which is about 15Km.

--

Change of mind.
The cost of travel would be
P33 for the house-Silang tricycle (special solo fare),
then P14 from Tagaytay back to Silang (on a jeep after the long run),
and lastly P33 for the Silang-house return tricycle trip.
That's P80.

Can I cut the travel and do something that would be more beneficial? More meaningful?

--

Then there's my Run for Pandesal idea.
We are a family of six. In our barangay, there is no bakery to buy hot pandesal in the morning. The nearest would be from Barangay Iba which is around 3 kilometers away.

My mama (mother), will always buy us hot pandesal after her Sunday grocery chores in Silang Market. I thought, why not spend the P80 travel fare to buy hot pandesal?

And instead of the Aguinaldo Hi-way route, I'll be running from our house to Silang and then back. That's around 7 kilometers (back and forth).

I would be running from our house to Sitio Ilayang Pulo (500m)
and then to Barangay Iba (2.2Km),
and then an uphill climb to Barangay Pasipit (400m)
and then to Silang proper (400m).

I will buy the Hot Pandesal for the family breakfast on foot!
And then again back to our house on foot.
(Sounds like Panahon ng Hapon, hehehe.)

I don't have to wake up at 430am. Instead I'll be up by 530am and should be back by 7am after a long, relaxed, happy and meaningful run. And when everybody wakes up, they''ll have hot pandesal for breakfast.

Why not buy the pandesal from Barangay Iba?
I would have missed the uphill training and then lost some 1.6Km of mileage. Hehehe.

Sunday mornings would be a little more fun from now on!
And my mama would be able to eat her breakfast before she goes to the market. :)

Cheers!

--

[First Run for Pandesal]

I woke up at 5:25am. Filled my backpack with my water bottle and 3 P20 bills to buy P60 worth of pandesal. I crossed the "Welcome to Balite 1st" sign before the 3 minute mark (on my Casio digital + analog watch). I reached the starting point for the Pasipit downhill and uphill climb before the 15th minute mark.

The elevation of that hill was around 60-70 degrees. A perfect hill climb to stress the legs (yeah, stress!). I had to slow down after the hill climb partly due to fatigue and mainly due to the angry dogs barking and following me.

The bakery at Kiamzon Street, Silang was finally reached before the 20th minute. I finished my First Run for Pandesal at exactly 00:43:01.68 at my Casio.

The return run was a bit harder because of the elavation of our barangay. It's just like running from Silang-Tagaytay, it's an upward slope.

I discovered one thing and I cheerfully told my mama about this as well. I said, looking at my race pictures, I always wondered how celebrity runners can smile a lot as they run.

Yes, I enjoy the race and yes I'm also having a lot of fun. But to smile while running hard has been puzzling me.

I told my mama that my first Run for Pandesal was that type of run. I had to smile a lot while running because most of the people I see on the route were my friends, extended family and neighbors. I had to greet them with my early morning smile. :)

A lesson learned -- Run your neighborhood street and learn how to smile while you run.

Globe Run For Home - Official Results

Click Image to View Race Details

My official time was 53:42. The Net Time is only 52:42, which only means it took ONE full minute before I crossed the starting line (where the timing chip detector was positioned).

I finished on 75th place, around 21 minutes behind the race winner (32:51). I'm still that far behind? Hehehe. Not to worry as I finished faster than 1,232 10-km runners that day. Also, I'm at 24th place for 10-km runners aging 20-29, ahead of 277 runners in that age group. Hehehe. Not bad at all.

I failed to set a sub-50minute personal record. My average speed was 11.4Kph (kilometers per hour), that's an average of 5 minutes and 16 seconds per kilometer (for 10km).

Nice run. Good job. See you at the next race. :)

Full race details here. (Last Name = Deuna, Race Bib = 3560)

Globe Run For Home -- The Aftermath

53:40 - my unofficial 10km race time.

General: Great race. daming runners (around 5000+). top of the line sensor equipments. plenty of water and 100 plus isotonic drink hydration stations.

Complaint: Should have a Fast Lane to separate the walking 3K runners from the sprinting 10k runners particularly at the last kilometer of the race. 10k runners are pushing themselves harder while 3k runners are enjoying the "walk". Please give way to the more serious runners. Better yet, a fast lane should be cleared for the 10k runners.

Personal Assessment: A new Personal Record! 53:40 (still unofficial). Great Push! Congratulations to me. (Previous PR was 56:00 at the Race For Life 08)
Less Injuries. Except for the side-stitch and cramping calves past the 7th kilometer mark on the fly-over climb, I did not suffer from injuries and prolonged muscle pain and fatigue. Yehey! My body has now adapted to the physical conditions and requirements of a 10km race.

Rooms for Improvement:
1. Buy a pair of running shoes. My Reebok cross trainer isn't suited for running (especially for the 10km run). The heat of the road and the weight of the shoes contributes to slower race time, fatigue and raising body heat.

2. Buy a race shorts. A long and heavy cotton shorts isn't suited for a running race. The heavy fabric and the sweat-absorbing property of it does not help me run faster.

3. Train harder and train for the race track. I was caught unprepared for the fly-over climb. Hence, the side-stitch and the cramps. Thankfully, I was able to overcome both as they were'nt too serious. The pain lasted for about a minute only.

4. Start at the head of the pack. Starting at the middle or at the end of the running pack costs time. To achieve a better timing record, start at the head of the pack.

5. Build stamina for the 7th and 8th kilometer part of the race. Admittedly, the last 3 kilometer of the race is where I am weakest. Try to run better during this stage of the race.

6. Sprint Now, Rest Later. Use everything you have at the race. Towards the last 2 kilometer of the race, let it all out. "Take No Prisoners" mentality. Leave everything on the race. You have prepared hard for weeks, you have done everything you needed to. What are you waiting for? The last 2 kilometers of the race, show what you've got and empty your tank (of air, of energy, of everything). Let it out.

Future Plans:
The 50-minute or less goal is more achievable now more than ever.
I think I can get it done on the next one. The next is probably this August. :)

Globe Run For Home

Tapos nagpunta kami sa Globe Glorietta, nakuha pa namin yung Last Two Coupons ni Athan.

Hehe. Race Week na naman.. :D

Yup. Ganun kabenta yung Race.
Hehe. Looking forward to the this race.

[Preparations]

Nothing yet. Waaaaah. :'(
Thursday, sparring mtach scheduled for 6 rounds.

Friday lang siguro ako makakatakbo in preparation for the race.
I'll try to run for 40 minutes. Just like the last preparation run ko para sa Milo.

Saturday, papawis lang siguro for a few minutes para lang kondisyon pa den ang katawan.
Pero mostly, relaxation na lang before the Sunday race.

[Race Pack]

Uyy.. yung race pack pa pala. Kelangan namin i-claim yung race number, yung singlet (XL na size ko para iwas sugat sa kilikili.. remember the Milo blog? hehehe), yung disposable electronic timing chip (para alam agad yung race time sa finish line), atbp.

33rd Milo Marathon - PART 2

The first kilometer started very, very, very slowly.
There were more than 1000 runners squeezed at the start. We were somewhere at the middle.
The spacing in between was so tight that everybody else at the front needed to start running before we could start jogging.

It was jam packed at the starting line. The cameras help it tighten even more as everyone else who sees a camera in front of them cherishes the moment, slows a little bit more and flashes a smile of confidence and joy.

It took me around ten minutes before I could sweat and heat up to my running pace. I reached the first kilometer and there was a drinking station already.

I passed. I thought I didn't need it that early and I was just be running with extra weight in my belly. When I saw the Gatorade station at about the second kilometer of the run, I was a little hesitant to drink. Am I thirsty yet? Probably not. But then, man come 'on.. It's Gatorade. I began to think of a little refreshment, a little tasty drink won't hurt right? So I stopped for a drink.

If it was another water station, I thought I would have passed again. Hehehe. I was running fast (relative to my normal pace), so I'm wondering where would the 3rd kilometer be? Am I at the 3rd kilometer yet, Please say so as I'm getting more and more tired by the second.

Seconds past, minutes past.. No sign of the 3rd kilometer post yet. I just kept my faster pace.

And when I finally reached the 3rd kilometer post, I felt sad and worried? Only now? I'm already breathing hard and sweating a lot. I was worried I would gas out before I could even reach the 5th kilometer of the run.

[Overpass Run]
And then came the overpass. It's a climb. I was passing by tens of runners (every 20 steps) before the 3rd kilometer post. At the overpass, people started to catch up with me and I could only pass by one, two maybe three runners.

It was a struggle.
Yet it was a lot of fun.
If I were alone running, I would have walked at that overpass and took my time. But the smiling faces and struggling faces and the determined faces of my fellow Milo Runners kept my legs running. The faster runners were already going back to the starting line, I am still struggling to reach the halfway mark. :(

The 5th kilometer was a joy.
Wow, I'm already at the halfway mark. I wanted to raise my hands and shout (as if I sank the winning three-point shot at the closing seconds of a basketball game). I was all pumped up, I felt like I had a new set of fresh legs to run with. :)

At the halfway mark, we're given a yellow knot. It was a mark that you've crossed the halfway mark and you can go back to the starting line to finish the race. I put it around my neck. It was more than a mark to me at that point, it was a crowning glory. :)

I was already at the halfway mark and now's the part to finish the race. I'm going back to the starting line (where the finish line also is). Yehey!

The feeling was totally reversed:
When I saw runners already going back and I was still struggling to reach the halfway point, I was a little sad and troubled. When I reached the halfway mark and already going back and saw runners still struggling to reach the half, I was excited and revived.

That excited and revived feeling lasted until the 7th kilometer.
Three more kilometers to go!

Say what? 3 KILOMETERS???
The number weakened by spirit.
I cannot sustain my pace for another 3 kilometers, I thought.

So I ran slower, too slow actually.
Now runners start to overtake me and I couldn't help but run slow. :(

I tried to argue with my body that I have a goal to reach, a personal time record to break. I wanted to finish the race below the 50-minute mark. It was all futile as I continued to run slowly until the last kilometer mark.

[Last Km struggle]
The slow paced run helped me conserve energy towards the end of the race.
Seeing the last kilometer mark, I sprinted my way to the finish line.
I was swinging my hands freely.

(But not so freely due to the bruises on my armpit caused the size of the Milo Singlet. I took the Large Size, but my big body demands an XL perhaps. Hehehe. My armpit was always in contact with the clothing and the friction bruised my armpit enough that it hurts. Ouch!)

Never mind the armpit, I'm at the last kilometer of the race.
Go forward! Faster! Faster!

I was smiling a lot now.
I'm sprinting my way to the finish line. What energy! :)

By the way, I saw Zorro at the last kilometer of the race. He is still the Zorro-masked man I remember from my UP Diliman years. Zorro still attracts and frightens a lot of people. Hahaha.

Smiles, Sprints, Zorro.. I was having a great time. Then I saw the green tents of Milo at the finish line. The finish line is getting nearer and nearer. What a relief.

Not so fast.
After reaching the starting line, In what was supposed to be the 10th kilometer mark. We were still told to run hard as we were still 500 meters away from the finish line. Sad, but I can't argue now. Sprint more. Run Hard to the Finish Line.

[Time]
I reached the Quirino Grandstand at the 56th minute mark (over 6 minutes late of my goal).
Here's the results of the Milo 10Km Race. Congratulations to me as I still finished 160th of over 1000 finishers. Yehey!
[Injuries]
Five or tem minutes more and I would have suffered from cramps.
My calf muscles became too hard and tight from the long hard run.
I stretched my legs after the race, but I knew it was still very sore and fatigued.
Salonpas medical plasters, massage and Alaxan FR tablets helped me ease the pain.
Although it really took me three or four days before the calf soreness and fatigued went away.

All in all, it was a very nice experience.
Hopefully, I can beat the 50-minute barrier the next time I race.
Watch out for it soon! I'll be training hard for it! Hehehe.

So long, Stay healthy.

On Scoring a Knock Down

9 July 2009

On Scoring a Knock Down

Last time out, I blogged about how I won a not-so-eventful match.
I was little too careful about getting countered, so I have to tame the warrior in me to be a little less wild. I won.

The next sparring match after that win, I've forgotten how I won. I was so focused on correcting "not-so-eventful" side of the fight and threw everything else in the trash bin. I charged in, like a wild raging bull on a sole purpose, seek and-destroy. I forgot my boxing essentially.

My head wasn't moving while coming in. Worse, my hands are not protecting my open head. I was caught coming in with a lot of hooks to the head.

I was countered a lot. I was hit a lot. I was missing a lot and I was beaten badly. Yes, I might have still caught him a few times.. But more often, I'm the one taking punishments.

That unfortunate night, I can hardly sleep. I knew what went wrong, I just can't figure why I did throw my boxing away? The boxing style that won me the last time.

I might have just found my answer on my last sparring match. I hunted my opponent (my trainer, sparring partner and coach all in one) like a hungry tiger. No more like the unreasonable wild bull, but a hungry and calculated tiger.

I moved my head while coming in. My hands were held high for defense. My upper body mimics Ippo Makounochi of the Japanese Anime, KnockOut. Well, not as bold and not as smooth though as Ippo would.

I pursued my opponent, hunting him down.. throwing jabs to calculate the distance, and then throw my right bombs (straight right to the head).

After a few combinations, I would step back to avoid counters and then I'm at him again. I was closing the distance more so than I have ever done with my coach. I was so excited, a little bit relaxed and nervous at the same time.

He was so close to me like one punch from him would catch me. The tension was too high, but I have confidence in my own power and skills. Well, not very skilled yet but I knew I had more power in my punches and I knew I could take his punches.

The first round ended.
I've hit him a couple times.
As expected, he was on his counter-punching mode.
I was carefully on the attack so I did not get countered a lot this time around.

Being so close to a punching opponent is the most exciting seconds of my day that sparring day. Adrenaline rushes in my body, the excitement builds up, I could feel the intensity if the match on the highest level. I hunted him like the tiger I have in me, and I did not back down. It was a very action-packed round and I feel so relaxed, confident and so eager to exchange.

I was making his style less effective by not rushing in carelessly. I have the longer reach, so I can box him from the outside. But that's just not my style and it's less exciting. So most of the time, I would attack him with jabs and straights, and once I get inside, I'll throw the short uppercuts to the body. There was one body shot, a right uppercut that him in the rib-cage. It was the best body shot of my young boxing career.

Then came round 3.
I was breathing a little heavier now. I could not pursue him as hard as the first two rounds. He's dancing away, still waiting to counter, still looking for my mistakes. I was following him, trying to engage.

As he rotates and slide to my left side, My reflex kicked in and I threw a right hand to his forehead. I caught him flush and HE WENT DOWN like a Marco Antonio Barrera in his first encounter with the Pac Monster.

He lost his balance as he goes backwards all the way to the ropes butt-first on the canvas with both his hands touching the canvas for support and balance.

I was victorious at that single moment. It was like everything I worked so hard for had bear its fruit -- a sweet one-punch knock down.

He got up, said I just caught him off-balanced and we continued to spar.
At round 4, visibly wanting to take revenge from the knock down embarrassment, he connected with a strong left-hand to my mouth (his left-handed by the way).

It was a solid punch as I felt the thud right through my skull.
I was alright, it's part of the game, let's fight.

But before all that, he made sure if I was OK.
He checked the upper lips and it was bruised but not bloodied.

Ok ka lang? He asked.
I said, Yes. SO we touched gloves and resumed.

What a fight it was. Action-packed, brawl, movements, drama. Everything I dreamed of a quality fight was all there. I wished I could present a video here.

After the fourth, which I believe I lost, we still had two rounds to go.
From the second half of the second round, I was breathing heavily due to the heavy exchanges of punches. So unsurprsingly, I was so tired by the start of the 5th round.

The last two rounds were very uneventful.
I just go by the motions, left jab, right straight, dance away.
He tried to land the left-straight again.
But this time, I timed it perfectly with a right straight counter.

The sparring ends. I was ecstatic. I'm very happy.
This is the fight that should be one of the most memorable of my fighting career.

Yeah. I know what happened the last time I won.
I became over confident and attacked wildly without caution.
I know how it hurts to lose in that particular fight.

I want to make sure that I still train as hard, if not harder, for the next battle.
I now know, that to satisfy my boxing thirst, I have to combine both my inner ferocity and the boxing skills that my trainer and coach teaches me. (Boxer-Puncher style!)

I'll be happy to fight again like I did tonight. I'm so very happy and proud. Yey!

33rd Milo Marathon

It was my second marathon run.
Oops, technically, it is not a marathon run, pardon the word.
It was my second 10Km run. That's much better.

I stayed at my condo for this weekend to be able to join the Milo Marathon.
Yeah, I kinda missed my family and my girl back at the province, but
sometimes, you just have to give up a little sacrifice.

I prepared for 3 full weeks to complete my second 10km run.
I knew it's tough, I knew it's gonna be hell on my legs for the last 5 kilometer of the race.
So I knew I better come prepared.

My first 10Km run, at The Fort, I finished at exactly 56:00 minutes.
That's a pace of 5.6 minute per kilometer.
To win, you probably need to run at a stunning pace of 3minute per kilometer.
Hehehe, But I'm not there to win, I'm there for an experience.
To finish the race, yeah, that's practically it! Finish the leg-punishing race.

This time, it's not just about finishing the race.
It's about setting a personal record.
I finished it 56 minutes the last time, I better beat my own time and finish below 50 minutes.

So I prepared myself for that goal.
I ran 3 times a week at the condo rooftop.
I started running for 12 minutes non-stop.
Then days later, I could do 15, then 20, then 24 minutes.
A week before the race, I could do 30.
Days before the race, I could do 40 minutes.

When I'm not running at the rooftop, I'm at the boxing gym honing my boxing skills.
It still helps me prepare for the run, because boxing is a lot of stamina-building routines.

The night before the race, at the condo, I couldn't sleep.
Hehehe, actually, it's more like, I wouldn't want to sleep.
I'm trying to become the champion of 18-hole Fantasy Golf Tournament on my PSP.
I failed, and realized it was almost 2am in the morning.

I have to wake up before 4am since my running buddies and I plan to go to
Quirino Granstand, Manila before 5am. The 10Km race starts at 6am.

I did not prepare for my breakfast.
When I woke up at 3:50am, I took a shower, changed clothes and
struggled to buy anything for breakfast.
Finally, I settled for a hot cup of Milo and some slices of Gardenia Loaf Bread,
(walang palaman).

Fortunately for me, I have the power behind my legs on race day.
No ill effects of "puyat" and though I did not fully energized my body with a heavy breakfast,
I was able to finish the race.

It was a lot fun.
Thousands of runners flocked the streets for the Milo Run.
Students, sweethearts and partners, employees, oldies, sexy ladies, macho men, you name it,
every people from all ages and walks of life were there.

I started from the Starting Line with my boss and her sister together with a lot runners.
Everyone's eagerly anticipating for the starting signal (let the gun be fired).
There was MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando, Manila Mayor Fred Lim, the Milo Marathon officials,
the race volunteers (who gives water and gatorade along the race, some directs you where to go).

[To be continued ...]

The Battle for Improvement Begins

25 June 2009
The Battle for Improvement Begins

Ganda ng performance ko strategically.
Mejo tensed pa den nung first two rounds, like gigil tumama at saka ramdam
yung ilang bwan na walang sparring.

First two rounds:

yung depensa nya.

Based on my opinion, pedeng tabla yung first two rounds kasi wala masyadong
effective punches. Pero pede ding iiscore saken slightly kasi mas marami kong jabs
saka mas aggressive ako na sumusugod paminsan-minsan.

Yung style nya this time ay mag-abang na magkamali ako at matamaan ako ng
wala sa tamang posisyon.

Rounds 3, 4 and 5

mabilis yung follow-up sa taas.

Tapos umuubra den yung jab, habol sabay jab-straight.
Nasa full defensive mode sya most of the time.

Tapos nung nagconnect yung right straight ko one-time.

Isa pa, handa talaga kong pakawalan yung uppercut sakaling lumapit sya saken.

Nde ganun ka-exciting yung laban.

tuwing maglalapit kami.

Conclusion:
I've won the match, I think 4 rounds to 1.
Pero marami pa kong pedeng improve:

1. Faster jabs (Straight and ALmost Reaching). Double up.
-> Left Jolt !!!
-> If cannot, just try to partial jab then Boom (Double Up)!

2. Movements to set up the body shots.
-> Bob and Weave
-> Slip and Slide
-> Box in Circles

3. Left hook.
-> Power Line (Close the Gap!)

4. Defense. Effective yung high-guard.
As I've said, nde sya naging aggressive sa sparring na 'to. pero di ako kelangan magpabaya.
More practice sa defensive skills.
-> Aggressive Defense
-> Block and Parry
-> Evade and Counter
-> Hands Up and Head Movements
-> Semi-Crouch

5. Last the 6th round. After the 5th round, which I didn't expect na aabot kami ng 5. Alam ko talaga,
4 rounds. break tapos 2 rounds ulet. Tinanggal ko na yung gloves ko. Sabi nya, isa pa. "Ayaw mo na?
Ayaw mo na?." From his voice, gusto pa nya talaga ng isa pang round. Pero nde ko na kaya, I could have
given another round. Pero I'll be a stting duck.
Hehehe.
-> Relentless, Never Give him room to breathe

6. Use the Right Hand a lot more. Leads. Straights. Upper Cuts to the head and to the body.
-> Violent yet Controlled Straights and Uppercuts
-> Unforgiving Body Assault
