The value of the UP Experience

There are no children here

This week, I went to a meeting at the UP School of Economics and
I came
away with renewed belief in the value of the UP experience.

If you speak to anyone from UP – student, professor, alumnus -
you will get
no Latin slogans or apologies about how the school
teaches values in spite
of its outward materialism. This is not a
student population that thinks about
basketball games or
memorizes school songs. This is not a school that
chooses
one statement to drill into the minds of its students.

This is not, of course, to say that UP does not care about values.
It is that
UP, in its own inimitable way, believes that values cannot
be force-fed.
The statue of the naked man that guards the entrance
to the campus in
Diliman best represents UP's approach to all
education and the respect for
students that is the center of its
educational philosophy. All who come to
this university,
regardless of origin, bring themselves naked, carrying nothing

but their thirst; like the proverbial empty teacup, making an offering
of self,
waiting to be filled.

Adults

For many students from private schools, the first lesson that is
learned
here is that this is a school for adult education. There are
no children here,
and that is why no parents are allowed either at
freshman orientation or
during enlistment.

The spirit of the oblation lies not in a mother or a father offering up
his
child to the world, it is that of the newly adult, freely offering of
his self.

I remember quite vividly that moment that drove home how different
the
UP education continues to be. It was my daughter's first semester
in
university and she had invited a group of her high school friends to
our
house. One of them asked a classmate whether she had gotten
her parents
permission form approved for that weekend's outreach
activity. From the
UP population around the table came the mock
horrified responses of:
"Permission? " and "Outreach?"

I thought about it and realized that all of these students were, in fact,
legally adults. I thought it interesting that only the UP students
appeared
to appreciate this fact.

Even more interesting was the "outreach" comment. I think back to
my own
university years and the last three years that my daughter
has been in UP
and am certain there is no lack of civic activity.
There are medical
missions, house building projects, tree planting,
community work and barrio
work and so on. I realize now that the
reaction was not to the activity as
much as it was to the use of
the word.

One of the most important differences of the UP campus from all
the other
campuses my children considered going to is that this
campus has no walls.
Many parents fear this. They are afraid their
precious children will not be
protected from the ills of society in a
campus that is so open to the rest of
the world.

But UP is open to the world in more ways than just not having the
physical
walls.

Community

Being in UP means much more than being a student.
This campus is enmeshed in a community. This community is made
up not only of the transient population of students who go home
each night. It includes the many, many students who lay their heads
on dorm pillows each night, enduring time away from families in the
firm belief that this campus will bring them closer to their dreams.
This community includes the families of faculty and employees
who live on campus. It also includes the many people who work not
for the University, but nevertheless work on campus. This community
includes the lady who remembers the brand of cigarette you smoke
and automatically hands it to you in the morning. It includes the
gentleman who remembers you like pepper on your egg sandwich
or the one who knows you will dip your fish balls into two of his sauces,
who patiently waits for you to eat your three sticks before being paid.
It includes the woman who saw all her children through college by
selling peanuts every day on campus.

To a UP student, the daily heartbeat of the school is never far away
from the realities of the country. The word outreach suggests that
civic activity is something outside of the normal, something you do
once in a while. It must be immensely difficult to think of community
as a thing apart when your campus experience brings you face to face
with all of the world's realities every day.

Character

All of this probably explains that unmistakable sense of self that
you will find from students who come from this campus.

Here is a campus where all have the same opportunities to learn.
But also, here is a campus that will give all the same opportunities
to fail. There are no guidance counselors who will chase after you
because you have been skipping classes. The attitude this
university takes is that you must take the initiative –
for learning, for seeking help, for realizing you need help.

That is not to say that no help exists.
But it is help that is not forced upon you.

This is a university rich in both introspection and conversation.
On this campus, the student is constantly exposed to people –
faculty, administrators, community members, other students –
who care deeply and passionately about the world.
The conversations are almost never purely cerebral.
A single graph can provoke comments about government policy
and its effects on people.

As a result, UP is home to a student population that looks at the
world and cares. It is easy to see pictures of protesting students
and dismiss it as radicalism. But there are few campuses in this
country where students go beyond a passing curiosity about what
is happening in the world beyond their own lives. There are even
fewer universities where students not only care but also actually
believe they have a responsibility to make a difference –
not in some hazy future – today.

And that, I believe, is what truly forges character. Character is not
molded by speeches or long classes in ethics or theology. Character
grows from within. It begins by being handed the keys to your own self
and being told you are in charge; you now have power over yourself
and your own actions – and with that power,
you take on responsibilities.

Each student in this university goes through his own unique voyage
of discovery. On his voyage, as he decides what he cares about,
what he will fight for and what he will sacrifice, he crafts his
own personal values. That is what education is truly about.

My Boxing Bet

Predicting the outcome of a boxing match correctly can win you a nice amount of money. Predict the winner of the match.. and you win some.. Predict which way your chosen winning fighter wins.. and you win a little more.. Predict that your fighter wins by knock out in which round and you win a respectable amount of money.

The last time I checked on skybet.com, this prediction I am about to make can give me a return of P25,000 for an investment of P1,000. I have placed my P4,000 bet already (P100,000 worth if I am correct). Do not bet the farm though, bets are nothing but predictions.. ;)

Quote of the Day - Niels Bohr - "Prediction is very difficult, especially if it's about the future."

Hey, I can try.
Here is how I see the Juan Manuel Marquez (JMM) - Manny Pacquiao (PAC) World Super Featherweight Championship bout on March 16 plays out:

Rounds 1 to 3.
JMM fights with caution. PAC tries to read JMM's fight plan. JMM jabs a lot to keep PAC at bay. PAC with a lot of head movements and side-to-side footwork to avoid the stiff jabs constantly throwned at him.

JMM appears to win most of the rounds because of the jab and because he controls the pace of the fight so far -- slow and defensive. PAC contented to test the body and defense of JMM. PAC appears not to do any effective damage though.

After the first 3 rounds, JMM leads 2 rounds to 1.

Round 4. PAC getting busier. He knows JMM will not initiate the contact. PAC's work rate increases. JMM more cautious on this round. The psychological effect of being knocked down thrice in the first match is too much for him to ignore. PAC does not seem to bother being behind on points, he stalks JMM and appears to land some good shots. The right hook lands sharp. JMM more cautious than ever, continues to fight behind the jab.

Round 5. PAC lands the left straight with dashing speed. JMM shrugged it off and retaliates with a right hook and a left uppercut. The crowd goes crazy. PAC lands another right hook, and another one. JMM backpedals.

The fight is getting faster now and the momentum is swinging to PAC's favor. JMM knows he's beginning to be dragged into PAC's fighting pace so JMM throws a lot more jabs and is not letting PAC get inside. PAC weaving his head continuously, he does not want to stop at all and eats some of JMM's jab in the process.

After 5 rounds, JMM leads with three rounds to two.

Round 6. PAC goes to the body, 3 solid shots landed downstairs. JMM appears hurt this time. PAC stalked JMM to the corner. PAC unloading a barrage of punches. JMM cannot go out of the corner, he is still hurt by the body punches. PAC connected with a right uppercut. PAC digs to the body, JMM countered with a solid right flush on PAC's face. JMM connected again with the left uppercut. PAC raises both fists as if to say, "Let's get it on." The crowd is on its feet. PAC dashes again to unload his body attack, PAC seem to target JMM's body a lot in this round and JMM able to counter PAC. Last ten seconds, JMM leads with the right cross. PAC moves inside to JMMs body and finished with a hard combination to the body.

After 6 rounds, it's 3 rounds for both combatants.

In PAC's corner.. Coach Roach reminds PAC not to get careless while moving in but commends PAC with the body blows. "Bumabagal na sya, Konting pasok pa sa katawan.. bibigay na yan (JMM's getting slower bacause of the body blows, a little bit more and his body will soon fall), " remarked Buboy Ferandez with enthusiasm and excitement.

In JMM's corner.. Coach Nacho does not like what he sees.. He urges JMM to throw the jab more.. throw it a lot more.. "You're letting him close the distance.. throw the jabs more. throw some power behind the jab.. Make him pay for it. (In Spanish of course)."

Round 7.
PAC makes the sign of the cross before the bell rings to start the round. PAC attacked JMM once again. PAC is a lot busier with his head and footwork.. JMM waits for his chance to counter and keeps PAC at bay with strong jabs. PAC faked the right jab and moved to his left.. He perfectly timed JMM as JMM moved to his right.. PAC unleashed the left hook to JMM's right abdomen. The crowd shouted in awe. PAC followed it up with a hook to the face. JMM backpedals anew. PAC gains momentum and continues to drive forward. He stalked JMM wherever he preferred to go.

JMM appears to be bothered by the body blows.
PAC's face is reddened and swollen by JMM's counter punches though.
This is an outstanding give and take fight for the PAC monster.
Harold Lederman has it 67 - 66 to PAC. He emphasized PAC getting busier and stronger and won 3 straight rounds from 5, 6 and 7 after trailing 3 rounds to 1 in the first 4 rounds.
Larry Merchant has it 67-67. He called the 5th round even.

Round 8.
JMM's feet is solidly planted on the canvas, he waits for PAC to get in and punish him with combinations of his own. PAC moving a lot, he blocks a lot of JMM's counter and is making JMM off balance by showing in a lot of angles. JMM prefers to stay in his counter-punching position while PAC still moves a lot sideways. JMM appears to be tiring and PAC is slowing down in the punches thrown stats as well. The crowd booed for the 1st minute of the 8th round.. JMM is cautious as ever and PAC seems to cruise through the round. Both fighters are taking a breather.

Going into the last minute of the round.. PAC feints a lot.. JMM throwing lots of jabs to keep PAC away. JMM's height and reach advantage helping him a lot at this stage of the fight. PAC landed the right hook to the face, and moves out of harm's reach. He dashes again with the lead left straight.. and it landed. JMM's counter missed, PAC planted the right hook to the body. PAC attends to JMM's face with 3-punch combo.. PAC is on his rhythm now.. JMM's accuracy is decreasing due to the heavy blows he's been receiving to the body. PAC unleashing and connecting more and more.. It's a landslide round for PAC in the 8th.

Round 9.
Coach Nacho is angry with JMM. He wants JMM to move more to avoid PAC.. "You cannot just stand in there.. Throw the jabs and keep him guessing.. Move to the right a lot more.. Avoid the left straight.. (In Spanish still)."
Coach Roach urges PAC to unload the heavy blows in the following round. "No more body shots now, Give him some power shots this time.. Remember how you punch against the heavy bag, Manny? Manny, listen to me.. throw power shots at him."

The round begins.. JMM still jabbing and is now able to move faster to avoid the rushing Pacquiao. JMM connects with the uppercut but missed with the right hook. PAC moves away and took the uppercut nicely. Both fighters have a strong chin. PAC dashes again after JMM missed with the jab.. PAC moves to JMM's side and unloaded the right hook upstairs. PAC getting more accurate.. He lands the left uppercut and followed it up with a right hook again.. JMM wobbles to the corner.. PAC calculates the safe distance while stalking at his prey.. He feints a right jab and strongly delivers the left straight.. JMM is hurt.. PAC continues with his flurries.. PAC connects with the right uppercut.. JMM is down.

One.. Two.. the crowd is on its feet once again.. Pac mania has never been so alive.. The Mexican cheering JMM to get up.. JMM is up again after the 7th count.. His eyes seem OK but his legs are still wobbly.. PAC attacks anew at the signal of the referee.. PAC landed the patented 1-2 -- right jab, left straight combo.. JMM is hurt.. He's hurt.. PAC took him to the corner and attempts to finish off the wobbling JMM.. Hooks and straights connected.. JMM still punching back.. Pac connects with the thundering left straight..

JMM is down and OUT. He took a lot of punishment in the 9th.
PAC takes the Super Featherweight Championship of the World..
I take P100,000 more in my bank account.
What a great day!

Goals and How to achieve them THIS TIME

Happy New Year. (wow, where have I been? you might asked..)

Not much really. Just doing more or less the same but starting to figure out what I want for this year.

I've been reading some useful books, thanks to my colleagues at Digisoft. I've read Bo Sanchez's books as well as Alex Lacson's and a few software books and a romantic book from Joshua Harris.

As a result, I've been led to a long term goal of being healthy, happy, wealthy and wise. Easy to say and not so simple to achieve.

How healthy is my goal? What am I willing to give and to sacrifice for it? Am I prepared for a full year of physical training? Will this goal materialize or will it be archived to my long list of goals that were never achieved?

What is my definition of happiness? Better yet, what makes me happy? What do I need to have and to feel to be really happy? What do I need to do to be happy?

Wealthy.. What for? And if the answer leads me to happiness or in some ways help me to be happy, the next logical question is How?

Lastly, wisdom. Can it be gained? Is it a need? Is it enough to stay at my level of knowledge? How can I be wise? How do I learn more? What is my motivation to become wiser?

These sets of questions made me think of a lot of things about how I want my life to be lived. The new year has just began. I have answered my own set of questions. One person, Doctor Sjuggerud gave an advice on how to achieve anything for the new year. Write simple and significant goals and have someone know what your written goals are. At the end of the year, you and that responsible someone will go through your goals list, either to celebrate together the product of a year's hard work or to analyze together what went wrong.

Having simple goals is one of the keys of making new year's goals and resolutions achievable. Simple goals are easy to realize and knowing that they can be achieved keep you focused on realizing such goals.

Goals have to be significant. Goals vary from one person to another, and personal reasons greatly dictates why such goals are desired. In any case, our goals must have a positive effect on how we want to direct and live our lives and of those people we love. Goals can be as simple as kissing our parents every morning and showing respect to them. And this simple little thing of love and respect can lead to better family relationships and a better and happier feeling at home.

We must write our goals. This little effort of writing makes us think deeper and committed to our goals. Having them written will remind us of the goals that we have set to achieve for the year. It is also recommended to write why we want to achieve our goals (their significance). This way, when we reach the point where we might want to give up, we can be reminded of why we wanted to achieve our goals.

Lastly, we must have at least one person who knows what we want to achieve. I can say that I have written 5 goals for this year and say at the end of the year that YES, I have achieved my goals. I am responsible for myself. It may work, but it is a lot better to have someone to check our list of goals.

It works both ways. We have someone responsible to check on us and in return we are responsible to that someone to commit to our goals and achieve them. There are times that we may want to give up on ourselves, but knowing that we have bothered someone to check on us, we may think twice on giving up and not waste our efforts and that someone's efforts as well.

Healthy, happy, wealthy and wise. My goals are set and 2008 has just began.
I wish to tell you my own set of goals next time.

Happy New Year.
