Week Four of 9 Weeks to Milo

Rains poured. Winds blew. Storms passed by the Metro. I stayed indoors with no chance to run at the park.

My 27Km Sunday long run supposedly on June 19th did not proceed as planned. It was raining when I woke up. And it feels so good to stay in bed when it's raining. Plus it really is a risky decision to run in the rain.. much more risks in a storm.

Fortunately, the following Monday was a nonworking holiday and the sun finally appeared. I was able to complete the 27Km long run as required on Week Three of my 9-week marathon training schedule.

Tuesday, I came to Velazquez Park at night when I thought the rain has stopped. And it did, until I reached the park. Rain poured down slightly again. I waited for the rain to stop under the shade of a full grown tree.

After about twenty to thirty minutes waiting, the rain stopped. I thought I would be able to squeeze in a Yasso x 8. But my tired legs (after the previous day's long run) coupled with the slippery roads made running intervals very difficult. So I thought I would just switch the Easy 15Km (my Thursday schedule) with the Yasso x 8. We have to be flexible on our schedules, right?

Yes! when we can. No! when we have absolutely no control on everything. After about 2.5 kilometers, heavy rain poured down and I had to run to a nearby building for shelter. No chance of 15 kilometers that night.

No running again on Thursday night as Typhoon Falcon passed by. The roads were flooded. The storm winds mightily blew away whatever it can blow away. I, again, had to stay indoors.

Two consecutive missed runs -- a Yasso and an Easy 15Km. I was praying for a run-friendly weather on the following Sunday for a 29Km run. And good enough, I was given one. Thank God!

I was very excited to run after a couple of missed runs. But I was also less prepared for the long run. My legs were frozen for a few days and with basically zero mileage on those stormy days, I had to deal with my lazy legs.

After 25K kilometers of the planned 29, I felt I had nothing left in my body to finish the run. Every stride was hard and I kept complaining about my tired legs. Anyways, I had no other option but to finish the long run.  I had already spent all my money on energy drinks and bread along the route.

Marathon

The key, I think, is to remember how it was the last time I ran the Milo marathon. I was forced to walk 12+ kilometers due to fatigue and lack of training mileage. That was a nightmare I did not want to repeat ever. So I kept running. Until 4 kilometers became 3, and then 2, and then 1. And when I finally reached our house, I finished in 3:03 hours it felt like I ran a marathon.

For I was so tired and I did have nothing left. Nothing but faith, and hope and aspirations. The next time I run a marathon, I would not walk the final 12+ kilometers ever again.

An Adventure Avalanche

When I was probably on your situation right now, a  runner scanning and searching for the next worthwhile running event, I stumbled upon an orange-themed poster with a young male runner on a Great Wall of China background. Not only that, but a roll-on and an aerosol deodorant stood over the very familiar and famous RUNRIO logo. I assumed it was just another gimmick to catch the attention of us runners on the search of a new race to participate in.

Like come on, we have too many races to choose from and we have too little money on our pockets right? Naturally, we only try to squeeze the best of the best on our racing calendar. Don't we? So what stands out on the Rexona Adventure run? Does it really offer a whole new adventure for us runners?

Unique Race Route
The half marathon category offers the SM MOA grounds and much of Roxas Boulevard (Rizal Park in Manila to Airport Road in Baclaran). It is a unique race route that will also be used for the half of the 35th Milo full marathon route. Running the Rexona half marathon gives us an opportunity to scout and be familiar with the new Milo marathon route (Milo Manila Eliminations is just a full week after the Rexona Run). And for an aspiring Milo marathon qualifier, this is a great opportunity worthy to be grabbed.

Rexona 2011 Half Marathon Route

Unique Orange Singlet
I wonder when was the last time I had an orange singlet for a race. Ok, I give up. I haven't had one. The unusual and good-looking orange singlet courtesy of New Balance compliments my orange Mizuno racing shoes. I am getting that singlet folks.

Chance to Win a Great Wall Adventure
I wonder how it feels like to run on the Great Wall of China. A historic site, a man-made architecture still visible on the moon, high-altitude with a great view of the Chinese lands, mountains and forestry. That would be an awesome thrill of a lifetime. And by running and finishing the Rexona Adventure Run, we get a chance to set our running foot on the Great Wall.

Passport to an Array of Fun Activities
While we wait for the lucky and blessed winners of the Great Wall Adventure, we can have our own little fun and adventure on the Metro with the Rexona Hub set up on the MOA complex. Non-runners and runners alike can participate on 5 different activities from July 23-24, 2011:
o Zip Line
o Reverse Bungee
o Zorb Maze
o Wall Climbing
o Free Fall

All-Expense-Paid Barkada Adventure
Buy or bring any proof of purchase of a Rexona Men Adventure stick, spray or roll on and you get a raffle coupon for an all-expense-pad adventure package with 3 of your friends to Banaue, Bohol or Cagayan de Oro. Complete at least 3 of the 5 activities listed above and double up your raffle coupons. The more coupons, the more chances of winning.
Be Amazed by the Rice Terraces
Try a Root Climbing Adventure in Bohol
How about Whitewater Rafting in Cagayan de Oro?

Photo Contest
P10,000 is also up for grabs for the 1st prize winner of the Rexona Run and/or Rexona Hub 2011. Just take your cam and shoot a Rexona moment that captures the spirit of fun and adventure of the Rexona event. P7,000 goes to 2nd prize winner and P5,000 for the 3rd prize. Three consolation prize winners will also be given with P3,000. Gift packs await all the winners of this photo contest.***

Writing Contest
Another set of P10,000, P7,000, P5,000 and three consolations prizes of P3,000 is to be given away for the writing contest. Written entries should convey the spirit of fun and adventure at this Rexona event 2011.***

Suppose I don't win the race (and I usually don't), I still have a chance to win a Great Wall adventure. I go home with a finisher's medal, a finisher's shirt and my orange singlet complimenting my orange running shoes. I also get to have some fun on the Rexona Hub and do all five different activities and have a chance to win a local destination all-expense-paid adventure tour with my 3 friends. And to fatten my extra thin wallet, I could take some photos during the race and the fun-filled activities to win P10,000.

And lest I forgot, I am writing this piece of article to have a chance of winning the writing contest. Hahaha. So what are you waiting for, go get some of this Rexona Adventure avalanche! Hurry! Now na!!

Week Three of 9 Weeks To Milo

This is already the third week of my 9-week marathon training schedule.

So far so good. The body feels stronger though still a little bit slower as compared to my speed on the Greentennial Half Marathon race. Hopefully, I can bring my body back to that speed as I continue on my training.

The focus for this week is still on improving my speed using the Yasso interval training run and on building endurance with Easy runs and Sunday long runs.

Provided below is a summary of my runs this week and the past 2 weeks.

Marathon

Yasso x 7 (12 KM), 1:04:23 hours
8PM Tuesday, June 14
Velazquez Park, Makati

As a response to my poor repeats on the last two laps of my Yasso x 6 training last week, I decided to increase my recovery times. Just make sure I have recovered enough and that I utilize all the remaining seconds that I am allowed to recover (Yasso principle is to run the 800 meters and then jog/walk to recover using the same amount of time it took us to run that distance). I improved ever so slightly, from a double 3:17 on the last repeats of my Yasso x 6, to a 3:13 and 3:16 on my last two repeats of the Yasso x 7.

Not a major improvement, but still.. an improvement. Hehehe. More importantly, I stayed within my 3:00 - 3:20 target repeats which predicts a marathon finish time of under 3:20 hours.

EASY 15 KM, 1:16:16 hours
8PM Thursday, June 16
Velazquez Park, Makati

As of Thursday, my legs are already eager to run at race pace. I had three or four kilometer laps under 5:00 minutes. But I had to control the enthusiasm. I need not overdo my EASY runs. Just run, relax and get the feel of running while piling up the mileage database.

Finished 15 kilometers at a 5:06 pace.. OK, I know. I am a bit too eager to run fast as of this stage of my training and I can barely control myself.

Bless the Lord God almighty for the joy, that runner's high, and the strength, speed, endurance and discipline to keep on running.

Strength training sessions continue this week and I am feeling less pain as compared to last week. My body must have been adapting to the stress applied to my arms, chest, back, legs and shoulders. Will this training help my legs endure the longer long runs up ahead on our marathon schedule? We'll see this Sunday on a 27-kilometer run.. and on the succeeding long runs up ahead till Milo marathon.

Week Two of 9 Weeks To Milo

Yasso x 6 (11.2 KM), 1:00:58 hours
8PM Tuesday, June 7
Velazquez Park, Makati

Started my Yassos this week. Still fast and strong on the first four 800-meter repeats.. 3:05, 3:08, 3:10 and 3:09.

Then I started to slow down inevitably on the last two laps.. both clocked at 3:17 minutes.

My Milo marathon goal is to qualify (3:45 hours for my age bracket). And I also wish to finish under 3:20 hours..  I must be able to sustain my sub 3:20-minute Yasso repeats to keep this wish achievable.

Finished the Yasso run satisfied.
Though deep within, I know I lost a step from my half marathon peak form. { During my Yasso x 6 and Yasso x 7 from those 5-week half marathon training, 3:11 minutes is my slowest repeat. }

We are just starting to run intervals all over again. So a couple of 3:17s are not that bad really. But this early, we need to adjust and keep on building and improving. Otherwise, we might not be able to sustain the sub 3:20-minute repeats on Yasso x 10.. Which definitely would be a juggernaut of a training run.. We'll see...

EASY 12 KM, 1:03:11 hours
8PM Thursday, June 9
Velazquez Park, Makati
I have started my strength training sessions this week and I am feeling the pain.

No pain no gain as they usually say when you are lifting weights and other strenuous exercises.

My body has not been used to strength training for months now.. Naturally, it will be sluggish and adapting to the stress of strength training on the early stages of this 5-week strength training.

3 Arms Chest & Back Legs Chest & Back Legs

5 Arms Chest & Back Legs Chest & Back Legs
6 Arms Chest & Back Legs Chest & Back Legs

The legs are aching and so are my arms, particularly at the triceps area.
Either way, the training run pushes through.

My motivation came from another runner - a black foreigner.
He is also running EASY on the 800meter loop of Velazquez Park and Makati Sports Complex. My EASY pace turned up a notch faster. Hehehe.

I averaged @5:16 minutes per kilometer for my 12 kilometer schedule. It feels good to run long and yet I can't be calm enough to say I am ready for 42-kilometers. 12 kilometers made me so tired.. how much more will 42 kilometers do to me?

I just looked up to the heavens and prayed.
The joy of the Lord is my strength.  I am running and is able to run because of a healthy body and a healthy mind that he has given me.
Just taking good care and being a good steward of his blessings.

Can I take 42 kilometers? I am getting ready..
As for now, I am happy to finish 12.

Week One of 9 Weeks To Milo

EASY 10 KM, 0:55:22 hours
8PM Tuesday, May 31
Velazquez Park, Makati

Coming from a half marathon race and a full week of rest.. My calves and legs are still a bit tired. Calves are tight and feels cramping.

Left knee is bothering me but still manageable.

Finished the run satisfied. Just took it nice and easy.

EASY 12 KM, 1:04:53 hours
8PM Thursday, June 2
Velazquez Park, Makati

I feel uneasy running at 5:30 minutes per kilometer.
I am worried I might get stuck at this pace and fail to speed up on my Tempo weeks.

Then I just kept on running at an easy pace and enjoyed the run.
Sometimes, it is really difficult to stick to the training schedule.
I want to speed up and feel the pace of my recently concluded half marathon race.

Thankfully, I have a training schedule.
I can calm down and focus on the day's goal.
Looking ahead, I will definitely be speeding up.
But for today, I just need to regain the feeling of running for an hour or more.

LONG 25 KM, 2:35:42 hours
5:20 AM Sunday, June 5
Aguinaldo Hiway, Silang, Cavite

Woke up 4am and applied some petroleum jelly on my crotches and underarms.
It is still full darkness on the road as I see through my room window.
I grabbed a cup of hot coffee and waited for a bit of sunlight.
By 5am, I am lying on the sofa and the it is still pretty dark outside.

Summer must have been over.

By 5:20am, I started running.
It would turn out to be my longest and most tiring run of the year so far.

During Sundays, I wear my heavy Adidas basketball shoes.
It is part of my training to wear heavy shoes on long runs.
And also partly because my Dad gave away my running training shoes to a needy relative.

By the 17th kilometer, I took a break.
Bought a bottle of Cobra energy drink and a few pieces of hot pandesal.
It is now 7am and the sun is shining brightly.
Not a good mix to my already tiring legs.

By the 21st kilometer, I was already dizzy.
The heat is bothering me a lot.
Besides, I am doing a repeat of my longest Sunday long run -- 25 kilometers.

I ran under the shelters of trees and the shadows of walls and houses..
Only to escape the wrath of the rising sun.

By the time I reached our house.. I feel I'm as good as dead.

Next week, I need to continue to start building up on mileage.
I cannot run a marathon like I ran on my first marathon training week.
I got to train harder and build strength and endurance.
